Previous Pastors of First Baptist Church

According to the minutes of the 1853 Annual Meeting of Western Baptist Association of Virginia, it stated Wetzel County was "an area destitute of the Baptist witness."  An elder was hired for the area.  In 1854, he started a church at Proctor.  It appears that in 1871, a group of approximately twenty members of the Proctor Church formed the Baptist In Doolin Valley.  Minutes of 1878 reflect the name changed to New Martinsville Church and the location changed.

The church went through a dormant period from 1892 to 1906.  We have had fluctuation in membership but show steady growth and development.  In 1933, the church, for the first time, became self-supporting.  From our formation, we had at least 1/3 of our expenses covered by the state office.

The church has gone through several building and expansion projects over the years.  On January 4, 1911, the first service was held in the new church at McEldowney Addition.  In 1915, a 20-foot addition was added to the front of the church.  On February 1, 1948, the church had a dedication service for its present structure at 4th and Leap Streets.  Due to church growth, on June 9, 1963, we dedicated the educational addition to the church.
